Who Was the White Death

The White Death was the nickname given to Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä during the Winter War (1939–1940). He fought for Finland against the Soviet Union and became one of the most lethal snipers in recorded military history.

Why Was He Called the White Death

Finnish soldiers called him the White Death because he operated in snowy, white camouflage and was extremely difficult to spot. His precise shooting and fieldcraft caused heavy casualties among Soviet forces, and his reputation grew rapidly on both sides.

White Death Record and Legacy

Simo Häyhä is officially credited with over 500 confirmed sniper kills in the Winter War, a total that made him one of the deadliest marksmen in any major conflict. His record is studied in military training and documented by historical sources such as the National WWII Museum.
