Early Life and Background

Jim Jones was born in 1931 in Indiana. He became a preacher and founded the Peoples Temple in the 1950s, initially presenting a message of racial integration and social justice. Over time, his organization grew into a large, controlling community with members across the United States.

Leadership and Control

As leader of the Peoples Temple, Jones exerted extreme authority over followers, demanding absolute loyalty and isolating members from outside influences. He used manipulation, fear, and coercion to maintain power, moving the group to San Francisco and later to a remote agricultural project in Guyana called Jonestown.

The Jonestown Tragedy

In November 1978, after a U.S. congressional delegation visited Jonestown, Jones orchestrated a mass murder and suicide event. More than 900 people died, many by drinking cyanide-laced Flavor Aid, in what became known as the Jonestown massacre. The event is widely studied as one of the largest deliberate loss of civilian life in American history. Learn more about the Jonestown massacre on History.com.
