Who Is the Highest-Paid NFL Player of All Time
The highest-paid NFL player of all time is often cited as Patrick Mahomes, whose extension with the Kansas City Chiefs set a record for average annual value. Other top earners include Dak Prescott, Deshaun Watson, and Joe Burrow, whose contracts also rank among the largest in league history.
How NFL Contracts Are Measured
NFL contracts are usually measured by average annual value (AAV), which spreads total money over the deal's years. Guaranteed money and signing bonuses also matter, but AAV is the standard way to compare the highest-paid players across different deals.
How NFL Pay Compares to Other Leagues
NFL salaries are high, but average pay per season is lower than in the NBA or MLB because of the league's roster size and short schedule. Still, top NFL earners make more than most professional athletes in annual compensation.
Why These Records Change Over Time
As the salary cap rises and teams compete for elite quarterbacks, new contracts can quickly surpass older records. The current highest-paid NFL player of all time can change when a star signs a new deal or a league-wide cap jump occurs.
