Who Is Ruby Bridges

Ruby Bridges is an American civil rights activist born on September 8, 1954, in Tylertown, Mississippi. She is best known for being the first African American child to integrate an all-white elementary school in the American South.

Her Role in School Integration

In 1960, at age six, Ruby Bridges was escorted by federal marshals to William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. Her enrollment followed the Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision, which declared school segregation unconstitutional.

Legacy and Recognition

Bridges’ courage helped accelerate school desegregation across the United States. She later founded the Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote tolerance and equal opportunity. Her story is widely taught in U.S. history and civil rights education.
