Paul Manafort’s Background and Role

Paul Manafort is a former political consultant and campaign chairman for Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Before his White House role, he advised foreign leaders and worked in U.S. politics, including the Republican National Committee.

In 2018, Manafort was convicted on eight felony counts of tax fraud, bank fraud, and failing to disclose foreign bank accounts after a trial in Virginia. He later pleaded guilty to conspiracy against the United States and conspiracy to obstruct justice as part of a broader investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Sentencing, Pardon, and Current Status

In December 2020, President Trump issued a full pardon for Manafort for offenses investigated or prosecuted by the special counsel. After his release from prison, Manafort largely stepped back from public political activity. For more details, see the Wikipedia entry on Paul Manafort at Paul Manafort.
