Opening and Early History

The Taj Mahal opened in Atlantic City in 1996 as a luxury casino and resort. Built by Resorts International, it was intended to be a major destination on the Boardwalk. The property featured hotel rooms, a casino floor, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

Financial Troubles and Closures

The Taj Mahal struggled with debt and declining revenue. It filed for bankruptcy multiple times, and ownership changed hands several times. After years of financial losses, the casino closed its doors in October 2016, marking the end of its operations as a gaming property.

Demolition and Redevelopment

Following its closure, the Taj Mahal was demolished in a controlled process. The site was cleared for redevelopment as part of a larger resort project led by Hard Rock International. The new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City opened on the former Taj Mahal location, replacing the old structure with a modern entertainment complex.
