Michelle McNamara died unexpectedly on April 21, 2016, at age 46. The Los Angeles County Coroner later determined the cause was accidental overdose of prescription medications, including Xanax, Adderall, and fentanyl.

Her husband, comedian Patton Oswalt, completed and edited the book using her research and notes. I'll Be Gone in the Dark was published in 2018 and became a bestseller.
