Early Family and Criminal Roots

Al Capone grew up in a working-class Italian immigrant family in Brooklyn, New York. As a teenager, he joined street gangs and quickly moved into small-time crime, which later connected him to larger criminal networks.

Connection to the Torrio Crime Family

Capone became closely tied to the Torrio crime family through his mentor, Johnny Torrio. Torrio introduced him to organized bootlegging and protection rackets in Chicago, and Capone later took over much of the operation when Torrio retired.

Leadership of the Chicago Outfit

After Torrio left, Capone effectively led what became known as the Chicago Outfit, one of the most powerful organized crime groups in the United States. The group controlled illegal alcohol, gambling, and labor racketeering during Prohibition.
