What Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrates

Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The observance highlights language, traditions, arts, food, and the economic and civic roles Hispanic communities play in the United States.

When It Takes Place

The celebration runs from September 15 to October 15. September 15 marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile, and Belize also celebrate independence during this period.

Origins and Purpose

Hispanic Heritage Month began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and was expanded to a month in 1988. It was established to recognize the influence and achievements of Hispanic Americans. For more details, see the official overview at Hispanic Heritage Month.
