What Does Get Rickrolled Mean
Get rickrolled means being tricked into clicking a link that leads to the music video for Rick Astley’s 1987 song Never Gonna Give You Up. It is a form of internet bait-and-switch where the promised content is replaced with the unexpected video.
How the Rickroll Meme Started
The prank became widespread on forums and social media around 2007, when users began sharing disguised links that redirected to the official Rick Astley video. The meme spread quickly because it was harmless, recognizable, and easy to execute.
Why People Still Get Rickrolled Today
People still get rickrolled because the joke remains a simple, low-effort way to surprise friends or readers. It works in comments, emails, and social posts where a familiar link creates curiosity. The video’s catchy chorus makes the outcome memorable rather than frustrating.
For more background on the song and its cultural impact, see the official music video page at Never Gonna Give You Up.
