Finny's Invitation to Gene
In John Knowles' novel A Separate Peace, Finny invites Gene to join him in jumping from a tree into the river during a Super Suicide Society ritual. The invitation is spontaneous and framed as a test of nerve, not a formal club initiation.
What Finny Asks Gene to Do
Finny asks Gene to follow him off the high branch into the cold water below. The act is presented as a dare that blurs the line between play and risk, with Finny emphasizing trust and daring over rules or preparation.
Why the Invitation Matters
The invitation marks a turning point in Gene and Finny's relationship, pushing Gene into a situation where he feels both thrilled and uneasy. It foreshadows later events that shape their friendship and personal struggles at Devon School.
