Who Were the USS Indianapolis Men of Courage

The USS Indianapolis was a Portland-class heavy cruiser best known for delivering components of the atomic bomb. The ship carried a crew of roughly 1,195 officers and enlisted men during its final voyage in July 1945.

Mission and Loss

After completing a secret mission delivering parts for the Hiroshima bomb, the Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. The ship sank in roughly 12 minutes, leaving many crew members stranded in open water with limited supplies.

Legacy and Recognition

The survival story of the Indianapolis crew became a symbol of endurance and courage. In 2017, researchers located the wreckage of the ship on the floor of the Philippine Sea. The history of the crew continues to be studied by naval historians and memorial groups.
