What Is The Witness on Netflix
The Witness is a 2015 Netflix documentary that revisits the 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese in New York City. The film examines the widely reported story that dozens of witnesses heard or saw the attack and failed to intervene or call police.
Who Was the Killer
The killer was Winston Moseley, a 29-year-old man who attacked Kitty Genovese outside her apartment building in the Kew Gardens neighborhood. Moseley was later arrested, tried, and convicted of murder and other charges in connection with the attack.
What the Documentary Reveals
The Witness features interviews with witnesses, neighbors, and investigators, and it challenges parts of the original narrative. It highlights how initial news reports exaggerated the number of bystanders and the failure to act. The film also explores how the case influenced public perception of urban crime and bystander responsibility.
