Who Was Charles Guiteau

Charles Julius Guiteau was an American lawyer and writer who assassinated President James A. Garfield in 1881. He believed his campaign speeches helped Garfield win the presidency and demanded a diplomatic appointment in return.

The Assassination and Trial

On July 2, 1881, Guiteau shot Garfield at a Washington railroad station. The president died from infections months later. Guiteau was arrested, tried for murder, and convicted. His erratic behavior during the trial highlighted severe mental illness.

Guiteau's trial drew attention to legal standards for insanity defenses and government accountability. While not directly a financial event, his actions influenced public trust and reform efforts in the late 19th century. Historical records and court documents are available through the Library of Congress.
