Species and Distribution

Several tarantula species live in the United States, primarily in the Southwest. Common genera include Aphonopelma and Brachypelma, found in deserts, grasslands, and scrublands. The Texas brown tarantula and Arizona blonde tarantula are frequently observed species.

Habitat and Behavior

American tarantulas typically burrow in soil or use abandoned rodent dens. They are nocturnal hunters that feed on insects, small spiders, and occasionally small vertebrates. Most species are docile and try to flee rather than bite when threatened.

Bites, Venom, and Safety

A tarantula bite is usually comparable to a bee sting and rarely dangerous to healthy adults. Some species flick urticating hairs that can irritate skin and eyes. The American Tarantula Society provides guidance on handling and bite risks at https://www.americantarantulasociety.org/.
