Who Was the Rotenburg Cannibal?

Armin Meiwes, a German computer technician, became known as the Rotenburg cannibal after he killed and consumed a willing victim he met online in 2001. The case drew widespread attention because the victim had explicitly consented to be killed and eaten.

What Happened in the Rotenburg Cannibal Case?

Meiwes placed an advertisement online seeking a young man willing to be slaughtered and eaten. He met Bernd Brandes at his home, where he killed him and recorded the act. Meiwes later consumed parts of the body and was arrested after police discovered the video and remains.

Meiwes was initially convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to eight and a half years in prison. After prosecutors appealed, a higher court convicted him of murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment. His case led to changes in German law regarding consensual killing.
