What Was the Roanoke Colony?

The Roanoke Colony was an English settlement established on Roanoke Island, off the coast of present-day North Carolina. Sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh in the late 1580s, it was one of the earliest attempts by England to create a permanent colony in the New World.

Why Did the Roanoke Colony Fail?

Supply shortages, poor relations with local tribes, and harsh conditions weakened the settlement. When a relief expedition finally arrived in 1590, the colony had been abandoned, and the word "CROATOAN" was found carved into a post, leaving its fate a lasting mystery.

Legacy and Historical Significance

Although short-lived, the Roanoke Colony shaped later English colonization efforts and remains a key part of North Carolina's history. Learn more about the colony and related archaeological research at the First Colony Foundation website firstcolonyfoundation.org.
