What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition in which skin cells multiply too quickly, causing thick, scaly patches. It is not contagious and can appear on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.

Common Symptoms and Triggers

Typical symptoms include red, inflamed skin covered with silvery-white scales, dryness, itching, and sometimes joint pain known as psoriatic arthritis. Common triggers include stress, infections, certain medications, cold weather, and skin injuries.

Treatment Options and Management

Treatment aims to reduce inflammation and slow skin cell growth. Options include topical corticosteroids, vitamin D analogs, phototherapy, and systemic medications. Biologic therapies target specific parts of the immune system and may be used for moderate to severe cases.
