What Is an Orangutan?

An orangutan is a large primate in the family Hominidae, known for its reddish-brown hair and long arms. Orangutans are the only great apes native to Asia, living primarily on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra.

Habitat and Diet

Orangutans inhabit tropical rainforests, peat swamps, and mountainous forests. Their diet consists mainly of fruit, leaves, bark, insects, and occasionally small vertebrates. They spend much of their time in trees, building nests for resting.

Conservation Status

Both Bornean and Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered due to habitat loss, logging, and palm oil expansion. Organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund work to protect remaining forest areas and support rehabilitation programs.
