What Is the Largest Black Diamond?

The largest known black diamond is the "Black Orlov," a 67.50 carat cushion-cut stone. It is a Type IIb natural diamond with a dark color caused by numerous graphite inclusions. The diamond is also known as the "Eye of Brahma."

Origin and Discovery

The rough stone was reportedly discovered in the early 19th century in India, weighing over 195 carats. According to legend, it was once set in the eye of a statue of Brahma at a temple in Pondicherry. The stone was later recut into its current shape to remove a flaw.

Value and Current Status

The Black Orlov has changed hands several times and is now set in a 108-carat diamond necklace with 108 colorless diamonds. It has been displayed at major gem shows and museums. Its value is driven by its size, unique color, and mysterious history.
