Face Value of a Nickel

A US nickel is worth 5 cents, or one-twentieth of a dollar. It takes 20 nickels to make a dollar. This value is printed on the coin and is fixed by the United States Mint.

Metal Content and Melt Value

Modern nickels are 75% copper and 25% nickel. The metal content is worth slightly more than 5 cents, but the coin remains legal tender at face value. For current melt value estimates, see usmint.gov.

Nickel Value in Bulk

A roll of 40 nickels equals $2.00. A standard bank box holds 50 rolls, or $100 in face value. Coin dealers may pay a small premium for bulk nickels based on copper prices.
