Immediate Shooting and Arrest

Lee Harvey Oswald shot President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963, and was quickly identified as a suspect. He then shot and killed Dallas police officer J.D. Tippit while attempting to flee. Officers arrested Oswald less than two hours later in a movie theater.

Death During Transfer

While being transferred from the Dallas police headquarters to the county jail on November 24, 1963, nightclub owner Jack Ruby shot Oswald in the basement. The shooting was broadcast on live television. Oswald was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital, the same hospital where Kennedy had been treated, and was pronounced dead shortly after.

Aftermath and Investigation

Oswald never stood trial for the assassination of President Kennedy. His death, along with the earlier killing of officer Tippit, led to a massive federal investigation. The Warren Commission concluded that Oswald acted alone, and his killer, Jack Ruby, was later convicted of murder. Additional details and records are available through the National Archives.
