Do Hornets Die in Winter

Most hornets do not survive winter. Only newly mated queens enter a dormant phase, while workers, drones, and the old queen usually die as temperatures drop. This seasonal die-off is a normal part of their life cycle.

How Winter Affects Hornet Colonies

As food becomes scarce and temperatures fall, colonies stop growing and abandon their nests. The queen hibernates in sheltered spots such as tree bark, leaf litter, or wall cavities. Nests are typically not reused the following year.

What Happens After Winter

In spring, surviving queens emerge and start new colonies. They build small nests and raise the first workers, who then take over foraging and nest duties. Colony size grows through summer, and the cycle repeats.
