Did the Pilots of Delta 191 Survive

The captain and first officer of Delta Flight 191 did not survive the crash. Both pilots died from the impact and subsequent fire at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on August 2, 1985. Their actions during the flight are studied in aviation safety training.

What Happened During Delta Flight 191

The Lockheed L-1011 encountered a severe microburst while on approach. The crew attempted to land, but the aircraft lost significant airspeed and altitude. The plane struck the ground well short of the runway, leading to the fatal accident.

Investigation Findings and Safety Legacy

The National Transportation Safety Board concluded the crash was caused by the pilots' decision to fly through a thunderstorm and the lack of onboard wind-shear detection. The disaster led to mandatory installation of enhanced ground proximity warning systems and improved pilot training for wind-shear recovery.

Survivor and Casualty Overview

Of the 163 people on board, 134 passengers and crew died. Several survivors suffered severe injuries. The crash highlighted the dangers of low-altitude wind shear and spurred nationwide changes in air traffic control and aircraft safety standards. Read the full NTSB accident report.
