What Is Smiling Friends
Smiling Friends is an adult animated series created by Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel for Adult Swim. The show follows a small team at a company dedicated to making people smile. Its episodes mix absurd humor with surreal visual gags and a deliberately simple animation style.
Did Smiling Friends Use AI
The creators have not stated that Smiling Friends used AI-generated images or video as a core part of its production. Most of the animation, character design, and backgrounds are hand-drawn or digitally illustrated in a deliberately rough, expressive style. The show's visual quirks are intentional artistic choices rather than the result of machine learning tools.
How AI Is Used in Animation Today
AI tools are increasingly used in animation for tasks like inbetweening, background generation, and style exploration. Studios may experiment with AI-assisted workflows to speed up production or test ideas quickly. However, many shows still rely primarily on traditional drawing, digital painting, and manual compositing.
