Who Founded the Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears trace their origins to the Decatur Staleys, a company team created by the A.E. Staley food-processing company. In 1920, George Halas and Edward "Dutch" Sternaman took over the team and moved it to Chicago, where it was renamed the Chicago Bears in 1922.

Early Team History

The Bears were charter members of the American Professional Football Association, which became the NFL in 1922. Halas served as player, coach, and co-owner, helping establish the franchise as one of the league's earliest and most recognized teams.

Legacy and Ownership

George Halas remained a central figure in the franchise for decades, and the Halas family maintained ownership for much of the team's history. The Bears became a cornerstone of professional football, with their founding story closely tied to the growth of the NFL.
