Can You Give the Flu to Your Cat
Human influenza viruses usually do not spread easily to cats. Most flu strains that circulate among people are adapted to humans and rarely infect felines. However, rare cases of cross-species transmission have been documented, especially in households with very close contact.
How Flu Can Spread Between Species
Flu can spread through respiratory droplets when you cough, sneeze, or talk near your cat. Sharing bedding, food bowls, or touching your cat after touching your face can increase exposure. The risk is low, but it is higher if you are actively symptomatic or immunocompromised.
Signs That Your Cat May Be Sick
Watch for sneezing, nasal discharge, watery eyes, coughing, lethargy, reduced appetite, or fever in your cat. These symptoms can resemble other common cat illnesses, so a veterinarian can confirm whether the cause is flu or another infection. If your cat shows signs after you recover from the flu, contact your vet promptly.
